Respiratory Failure Patients
  • Two recent articles highlight the important role Long Term Acute Care Hospitals [LTACHs] play in the continuum of care and confirm what Acuity Specialty Hospitals have believed all along: In appropriate patients, the early placement of tracheostomies, along with early transfer from intensive care to the LTACH increases the likelihood that patients will successfully wean from the ventilator.
 
  • A meta-analysis published March 11, 2021 in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery concluded that performing a tracheostomy within the first seven days of the start of mechanical ventilation decreases the time patients spend on ventilators, shortens their ICU stay and lowers their risk of ventilator associated pneumonia.1
 
  • A study published March 24, 2021 in BMC Pulmonary Medicine demonstrated that earlier access to LTACH care is associated with higher weaning probability for LTACH patients, suggesting patients may benefit from earlier discharge to LTACH. The study’s authors concluded that LTACHs benefit patients by providing care specifically dedicated to ventilator weaning in an interdisciplinary team, rehabilitation-focused care model.2
 
  • Having a tracheostomy in place is not necessary for a patient to be transferred to the LTACH setting; LTACHs can and do convert endotracheal tubes to tracheostomies. Tracheostomies are beneficial when the focus turns from initial stabilization and treatment to liberating patients from mechanical ventilation, as tracheostomies are more comfortable for patients and allow more effective weaning from sedation.
 
  • In addition to benefitting patients, LTACHs offer benefits to the healthcare system as a whole by relieving pressure on hospital intensive care units, reducing over-crowding which may improve outcomes.2
 
  • Collaboration between LTCHs and STACs is essential for the care of patients who are difficult to liberate from mechanical ventilation. These patients need specialty care, and Acuity Specialty Hospitals are designed to meet that need.

Meet Our New CEO

Introducing Joseph G. Hugar, MHA, Our New CEO
 

Joseph Hugar is a highly engaged and transformational healthcare executive with 30 years of senior leadership experience across the entire continuum of care. Joe serves as the Chief Executive Officer at Acuity Specialty Hospital of Southern New Jersey. Prior to joining the Acuity team, he served as President and CEO at a 220-bed acute care hospital with 21 outpatient and diagnostic centers. 

Joe has supervised various complex acute medical centers and large portfolios of diagnostic ambulatory care centers, rehabilitation hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, senior housing, home health and hospice organizations.  With a proven track record of meeting and exceeding clinical, financial, and satisfaction metrics; Joe has operated in for-profit, not-for- profit and faith-based hospital systems.

Joe and his wife Mary have three grown children and are expecting their sixth grandchild. He enjoys long distance biking and logs over 100 miles per week. He also enjoys skiing, hiking, cooking, mentoring the healthcare workforce and time spent with family and friends.

Meet DaVita, Our Director of Provider Relations
DaVita joined Acuity Specialty Hospital in 2018. She has over 18 years of healthcare experience and has spent the last 11 of those years in healthcare sales as a clinical liaison and a sales and marketing director. She holds a bachelor’s degree in social work, a master’s degree in health administration and earned her certification in coaching in 2017. DaVita’s number one role is being the mother to her amazing teen daughter, Aniah Rose. She spends her downtime pouring into her family and her girl's mentoring program.

Meet Asia, Our Admission's Coordinator

Asia started at Acuity in June, 2019 as the Admissions Coordinator after working in healthcare administration for more than five years. She is a certified phlebotomy technician but chose to work in administration. One of her goals is to make sure that the clinical liaison team feels connection to being an employee owner as they often work in the field.

Meet Eddie, Our Chief Clinical Officer
Eddie A. Perez, RN, MHA, NE-BC

Eddie joined Acuity Specialty Hospital of Southern New Jersey at Willingboro in June, 2020 as Chief Clinical Officer.  He comes to Acuity with over two decades of nursing experience.  More recently, he worked for New Jersey area hospitals in progressively responsible leadership positions including Vice President of Patient Care Services, Chief Nursing Officer.  He has been successful implementing programs that improve mission critical goals in disciplines of direct patient care.

Eddie has presented for the New Jersey Hospital Association and American Organization of Nurse Executives regionally and nationally about Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB). He has co-written publications throughout his career.  Among professional organizations, Eddie is a member of the Organization of Nurse Leaders of New Jersey and the American Organization of Nurse Leaders as well as being Board Certified as a Nurse Executive (ANCC).

Eddie received his nursing diploma from Muhlenberg School of Nursing and a bachelor’s of nursing and masters of health administration from the University of Phoenix.  Eddie resides in Central New Jersey with his wife and two children.
